The National Capital Area Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists (NCAC-APG) was formed in 1992 to promote the high standards of ethics and professionalism in the genealogical field at the regional level. Nearly all of our members conduct research in local repositories, such as the National Archives and Library of Congress, but many have geographic and ethnic specialities outside the Capital area. Our members are also active in teaching, lecturing, publishing, and volunteering.

The NCAC-APG provides a list of members (see the Find A Genealogist tab) who are available for a variety of research commissions and speaking engagements. The Association of Professional Genealogists supports a Code of Ethics and provides for arbitration of complaints.

Next virtual meeting is April 17. See the schedule below.

Why Hire a Professional Genealogist?

Professional genealogy services cover a wide variety of assignments. Whether you need consulting services to help advance your own research or you want to hire someone to do all or part of the work, you can rely on APG members to adhere to a professional code of conduct from initial contact to delivery of results.
“At family reumions, we talk about assembling a family tree, or creating a Web site, or writing down all these great stories before they are forgotten, but we don’t know how to get started.”

“I’m skeptical about some of the information I find in online family trees. How can I separate fact from fiction?”

“I have 20 years’ worth of material on my ancestors, but they are just facts; I want a story.”

“I have hit a brick wall, but I love doing my own research. Can someone advise me on next steps instead of solving the puzzle for me?”

“I like researching online, but I lose interest when it involves trips to a library or an archive. I’m willing to pay someone to do the parts of the research I don’t enjoy.”
